Very common disease in developing countries where sanitation is poor. May be severe and possibly fatal.

Jaundice, fatigue, nausea, stomach pains. Children may not show any symptoms.

Person-to-person contact, or through food and water that has been contaminated by human or animal feces.

Follow strict food and water precautions. If traveling to a risk area, be sure to get a Hepatitis A Vaccine.

A virus that may result in a severe form of hepatitis that leads to cancer or death. Wide spread in many developing countries, especially Africa and Southeast Asia.

Intimate or sexual contact with an infected person, exposure to blood contaminated fluids, or exposure to used or dirty hypodermic needles or syringes.

Obtain a vaccine if your travel plans or activities put you at risk. Use safe sexual practices, and never use syringes, razors, or toothbrushes used by another person.

Everyone is at risk of catching influenza, the virus that causes the "flu"

Fever, diffuse muscle aches, headache, fatigue, and cough.

Obtain an annual influenza vaccine, especially if you are traveling abroad or you have a chronic physical condition. Wash your hands frequently while traveling during flu season.

A viral illness that infects the brain, leading to brain damage and sometimes death.

Early symptoms include fever, chills, headache, nausea and vomiting. Central nervous system infections develop consisting of stiff neck, delirium, paralysis, tremors and convulsions.

Transmitted by mosquitoes in various areas of Asia.

Consult with a SMARTRAVEL professional about your risk. Obtain a vaccine if you will be spending time outdoors in rural areas in eastern Asia. Observe mosquito bite prevention practices.

A parasitic disease that may occur as soon as one week after entering the tropics, and may progress rapidly to cause central nervous system problems and death.

Early symptoms fever chills, headache and generalized aches and pains. Advanced symptoms include seizures, coma, breathing and kidney problems.

Transmitted by infected female mosquitoes

A bacterial disease that is a significant cause of illness and death worldwide. Can cause meningitis (infection of the brain and spinal cord) and other diseases.

Early symptoms include fever, headache, and general malaise.

Bacteria are usually spread from person to person via coughing, sneezing, or direct contact.

Vaccination is recommended for travelers to parts of the Middle East and Africa where the disease is prevalent. Vaccination required for pilgrims to Mecca for the annual Haj.

A rare brain infection that can be fatal if not treated, but can be prevented by prompt immunization after exposure.

Transmitted by bite, scratch, or, less commonly, lick from an infected animal.

Consult with SMARTRAVEL to see if your travel activities warrant an pre-exposure rabies vaccine. If you receive a bite or scratch from a possibly infected animal, seek medical attention immediately.

Tetanus is a rare but severe disease that causes muscle contractions which can lead to breathing problems and even death. Caused by contaminated soil entering cuts or wounds.

Diphtheria is a respiratory disease which may cause severe heart disease. It is spread from person-to-person or via unpasteurized milk.

Polio occurs in the developing world outside of North and South America, and may result in partial or total paralysis. It is transmitted primarily through food or water contaminated with feces.

All Americans should receive their primary immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, and polio during childhood, with a booster against tetanus and diphtheria every 10 years. If traveling to the polio risk area, you should have received a polio booster within the last ten years. Consult with a SMARTRAVEL professional to determine your individual needs.

A life-threatening illness common in many developing countries of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

Extremely high fever, headache, tiredness. loss of appetite and dizziness.

Spread under unsanitary conditions, either person-to-person, or through contaminated food, drink, or water.

Vaccination is recommended for all travelers to risk areas.

A viral illness that can result in internal bleeding and liver damage.

Mild symptoms are similar to those of a flu, but a more severe case can result in nausea, vomiting, bleeding, abdominal pains, and jaundice.

Carried by some species of mosquito in Central and South America, and in tropical regions of Africa.

Travelers to or through a risk area may require a certificate of vaccination against yellow fever for legal entry. These must be obtained from a Certified Yellow Fever Center such as SMARTRAVEL. Follow mosquito bite prevention practices.
